Sutter, CA (February 22, 2023) – A woman and a young boy died as a result of a motor vehicle accident that took place on Monday evening, February 20, in Sutter.

The accident was reported just before 1030 p.m.

According to reports provided by law enforcement, 43-year-old Francisco Jauregui was driving east on California State Route 20 in a two 2021 Chevrolet pickup truck. For reasons unknown, his vehicle swerved across the centerline of the road and crashed into a 2023 Chevrolet trailblazer head-on.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 25-year-old Maria Flores Soto, and her child, a 16-month-old boy, were both killed instantly. A 15-year-old passenger in the vehicle suffered severe injuries. The victim was rushed to an area hospital.

Jauregui attempted to flee the scene of the crash before the police arrived. However, he was taken into police custody and charged with DUI causing injury or death, gross vehicular manslaughter, attempting to flee the scene of a crash, and child endangerment.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are being investigated.
