Pedestrian Accidents in California
According to statistics, a total of 470 pedestrians died as a result of motor vehicle accidents in 2021. More than 10,000 others were left injured. Year after year, we continue to see an increase in the number of people who suffer serious injuries or lose their lives as a result of these accidents.
The majority of pedestrian accidents that take place on our busy roadways are preventable. Some of the most common causes of these accidents include:
- Speeding: When drivers are speeding around pedestrians, they are likely to be unable to stop in time to avoid striking a pedestrian if they enter the roadway.
- Impairment: we see a significant number of pedestrian accidents take place as a result of motorists who operate their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Distractions: when people are not paying attention to the road ahead, they are likely to lose control of their vehicle and strike pedestrians in the area.
- Failure to yield: it is critically important that motorists yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and various other areas. However, we continue to see a significant number of pedestrians injured as a result of drivers who fail to do so.
Pedestrian accidents are often some of the most devastating types of collisions that are reported in our state. Pedestrians are more likely to suffer severe injuries due to the fact that they have no protection. In order to cope with the overwhelming impacts that a pedestrian accident can have, it is crucial that victims take quick legal action against the responsible party.
