Fitness Tips for Amputees

A few weeks after limb amputation, you may find yourself leaving the hospital and going home feeling powerless and restless at the same time, wondering if there’s anything you can do to facilitate your recovery and regain a sense of control over your life. The truth is that you can take an active role in your recovery by practicing residual limb care and engaging in physical therapy, as described in our previous blog articles.Skin Care for Amputees, Leg Amputation Recovery and Therapy.

Did you know you can also actually strengthen your muscles and improve your endurance? After such a traumatic injury, the very thought may seem unfeasible. However, it is absolutely possible – with the right training and help from the right people – to get yourself into good enough shape to lead an energetic, perhaps even athletic, lifestyle. Just follow the guidelines below:

  • Upper limbs strengthening – If you’re a lower limb amputee, you can focus on strengthening your upper limbs using weights, elastic bands, and any other appropriate equipment. It’ll be easier to use wheelchairs and walking aids if your shoulders, elbows, and hands are strong.
  • Core strengthening – Core strength exercises strengthen your abdominal, back and pelvic muscles, muscles that affect your ability to use your limbs properly. Certain core exercises can be performed in lying or sitting position.
  • Unaffected limb strengthening – The unaffected limb has to pick up the slack of the missing limb so it has to be strong. Use weights or an elastic band.
  • Stump strengthening – Developing strong muscles in the stump will be crucial for effective use of prosthesis. It is highly advised that you have a qualified physical therapist assist you with the exercises.
  • Balance and endurance – You should accompany your strength training with cardio-vascular endurance and balance exercises in order to allow functioning. Consult with both a physician and a physical therapist before training.
