All New Vehicles Must Have Rear View Cameras by May 2018

On March 31, 2014, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that rear view cameras are to be required in all new light vehicles under 10,000 pounds – including cars, SUVs, trucks, and vans – by May 1, 2018. The rule has already started phasing in and should be at 100% by the deadline.

The NHTSA finalized the rule after feeling pressure from advocacy groups, stating that the rule would significantly decrease fatalities and injuries caused by backover accidents, especially among children and seniors.

On average, backover accidents cause 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries every year. According to the NHTSA, children under five years of age account for 31% of backover fatalities, while adults 70 years of age and older account for 26% of backover fatalities.

Rear view cameras help prevent backover accidents by expanding the driver’s field of vision, allowing him or her to see any people or objects in the area directly behind the vehicle. Under the new rule, the driver’s view of the rear must include a 10-foot by 20-foot zone. There are also requirements for image size, linger time, response time, durability, and deactivation. Officials with the NHTSA are confident that these measures will save lives.

Numerous automakers, responding to consumer demand, are already ahead of the curve in implementing rear view cameras in their new models. The NHTSA estimates that 73% of light vehicles will voluntarily install rear view cameras by the deadline, with the projected cost per vehicle ranging from $43 to $142.
