As Data Hacks Grow, Data Breach Settlements Rise to New Heights

This morning, the Associated Press reported a major data breach in Europe, with hackers causing catastrophic disruptions in the Government of Ukraine:

According to AP, “Company and government officials reported serious intrusions at the Ukrainian power grid, banks and government offices, where one senior official posted a photo of a darkened computer screen and the words, “the whole network is down.”

Data Breach Settlement
Data breaches by hackers have become an extremely infamous and troubling international trend in recent years, but it’s not just Europe.

Just this week, Anthem, the largest health insurance company in the U.S., settled a data breach suit for $115MM. In recent months, Chipotle, known best for, perhaps, packing way too much food into soft shell tortillas, was attacked by malware that stole customer credit card information.

Data breach in the U.S. is a troubling trend

The number of data breaches in the U.S. has, dramatically, increased across the board, directly affecting the business, medical / healthcare, education, government and banking industries.

According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, the number of data breaches in the business sector has nearly doubled in two years, rising from 258 in 2014, to 495 in 2016. Data breaches in education has nearly doubled in the same time, jumping from 57 to 98, which may the most troubling statistic we’ve seen to date.

Data Breach Crime VictimsIn the U.S., it comes as no surprise that California, the tech capital of the world, suffered more losses via cybercrime than any other state in the union (circa 2015). Which is why the Los Angeles lawyers of Wilshire Law Firm are working hard to hold California companies who don’t protect their customers’ data accountable.
