Truck Accident Fatalities On the Rise

More People Are Getting Killed by Trucks

According to statistics published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), around 11 people a day – that’s more than 4,000 people a year – are killed in large truck accidents. On top of that, more than 100,000 people are injured every year in truck crashes.

Despite these shocking facts, there is no public outcry, most likely because national coverage on this issue is thin. Local press may publish stories about truck accidents on a case-by-case basis; however, very little reporting is done that connects the dots to show the overall picture – which is grim, to say the least.

Even though passenger car accident deaths have gone down nearly 2% in recent years, the rate of truck accident deaths has gone up an astonishing 18%! If this statistic was reported about any other industry – for instance, commercial jetliners – there would most certainly be a considerable push for reform.

But what’s behind this disturbing trend?

The reasons why are as varied as fatigued drivers who are pressured to violate Hours of Service (HOS) regulations, companies that implement slack policies regarding employee screening, and government that is slow to force new safety technologies onto American roads.

If we’re going to stop this surge from getting worse – and we should – then the trucking industry, the government, and the public need to work together to find ways to balance common sense safety measures with our evolving expectations for more and more goods. Only then will we be able to prevent thousands of lives from being needlessly lost every year.
