Start on smooth, flat surfaces and build up to longer distances and bigger slopes. Don’t fret if you’re only able to go very short distances at first; with regular workouts, you WILL get stronger and be able to push further distances.
- You don’t need expensive equipment – You can use resistance bands, dumbbells, or even cans of beans – anything, really – as weights for your exercises.
- Create a personal customized exercise circuit – Do not overexert yourself; work at your own pace.
- Find a workout buddy – A friend or relative can assist you with your exercises as well as keep you mentally motivated.
- Take up a wheelchair sport – There are numerous organizations that provide opportunities for individuals with SCI, among other debilitating conditions, to develop independence, confidence, and fitness through participation in community sports, recreation and educational programs.
