Northern Californians Get Free Towing on St. Patrick’s Day
On St. Patrick’s Day, friends and family get together to celebrate their Irish heritage (or just to partake in the festivities) with food and drink. In the event that you’ve been imbibing on St. Patrick’s Day, AAA Northern California will give you and your vehicle a free ride home.
This service is available to everyone, not just AAA members, and will run from 6 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day to 6 a.m. the next day. Simply call 800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP), say to the operator, “I need a Tipsy Tow,” and receive a free tow home of up to 10 miles.
All rides are one way, and each truck takes only one vehicle at a time. Extra passengers may hop on as long as there is adequate space for them in the tow truck. There is no reservation system.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), every year drunk driving accidents account for about 36 percent of all highway fatalities nationwide of people age 16 to 24 in the U.S. The rate of drunk drivers is highest among 26 to 29 year olds.
Last St. Patrick’s Day, more than 120 people were arrested in California for driving under the influence.
“Many people enjoy getting into the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, which tends to involve plenty of celebrating,” said Cynthia Harris, spokesperson for AAA Northern California. “If you’ve been drinking alcohol, don’t get behind the wheel. Give AAA a call and we’ll make sure you get home safely.”
Even a first-time DUI conviction in California can cost you a fortune – roughly $15,649 in fines, penalties, restitution, legal fees and increased insurance costs. Plus you can’t put a price on an accident that results in an injury or death. Therefore, if you’re going to be drinking this St. Patrick’s Day, get a ride home. Period.
