Car accident prevention technology is working!
According to new studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), automated car accident prevention technology results are in. Systems installed in cars that help prevent lazy drivers from unintentionally drifting into the wrong lane, or warn you when a car is in your blind spot, are working.
By the same token, the study also suggests these features make drivers more reliant on tech and less vigilant overall when operating their motor vehicle.
What are these features?
Lane “keeping” system – some cars even turn your wheel to keep you from drifting.
Blind spot “monitoring” – a dashboard alert will let you know your blind spot is occupied.
IIHS says that cars with one or both features have lower crash rates than cars without them.
Police crash data from 25 States
The studies looked at police crash data from 25 states, between 2009 and 2015, for vehicles with the features installed. The features were found to lower the rates of:
- Single vehicle;
- And head-on crashes by 11 percent;
- Plus, those types of crashes, with injuries, by 21 percent.
The study found that there were 40 fatal crashes involved and that the new technology decreased the chance of fatality by over 80 percent.
“Now we have evidence that this technology really can save lives and has the potential to prevent thousands of deaths once it’s on every vehicle,” said Jessica Cicchino, IIHS’s vice president for research.
According to the study, if all cars in the same 25 states were equipped with these features in 2015, an estimated 85,000 police-reported crashes could’ve been prevented.
QUESTION: Do you have these features installed in your car? Have they helped you avoid crashing, and, have they made you a less vigilant driver?
