Uber Data Breach Class Action
Have You Used Uber?
If so, you need to be aware that your data may have been in the hands of hackers. This sensitive personal information includes your name, email address, mobile phone number, and in cases of United States drivers, your license number.
Around 57 million accounts, both for passengers and drivers, were hacked and personal information exposed, in October 2016. Hackers accessed Uber’s Amazon Web Services using login credentials to steal unencrypted data of its users. Uber then proceeded to pay those same hackers $100,000 to delete this stolen data in order to cover up for their own security shortcomings. Hackers started selling Uber accounts on the black market before being paid and continued to do so after being paid.
Under California state law, companies must notify the attorney general and residents of breaches that effect more than 500 people, which Uber failed to do.
