MLB umpire Angel Hernandez, 55, has sued his employer, Major League Baseball and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred for racial discrimination. The suit accuses Major League Baseball of only promoting one minority umpire to permanent crew chief in the history of the game, and hiring only one non-white umpire to work a World Series since 2011.
Hernandez says that he has specifically been skipped over multiple times when being considered for World Series work, even though he has extremely high marks in his career as a professional umpire. The lawsuit claims that “less-qualified” white umpires have been selected over Hernandez, and that those decisions were, “motivated by racial, national origin, and/or ethnic considerations.” The suit seeks backpay and unspecified compensatory damages.
In 2000, MLB umpire Ron Barnes sued the league for $20 million. That case was settled for an undisclosed amount and Barnes was reinstated at MLB.
Have you been discriminated against at work?
Racial discrimination at work is the number one reported work harassment claim in the United States. When an employee as recognizable as a Major League Baseball umpire sues his employer for this type of action, it should be a signal to other workers in many other industries that their rights are just as important, and it’s time to take a stand.
If you have been a victim of racial discrimination at work, Wilshire Law Firm would like you to know that you are not alone. We’re here to let you know that you have options, and the legal experts of our team are ready to fight for your right to seek justice.
