5 Tips to Stay Awake on Long Distance Motorcycling Trip

Safe motorcycling requires focus on the immediate task and a keen awareness of everything going on around you. When you lose focus, or worse, nod off, you put yourself in a very dangerous position. So you must stay alert while riding, especially if you’re on a long trip. But sometimes this is easier said than done. After hundreds of miles of road, the road can become very boring. And boredom can lead to fatigue which in turn can lead to a crash.

Fortunately, there are many ways to stave off boredom and keep alert and awake, some better than others. Below, we explore and evaluate some of the more common methods used by riders:

  • Drinking coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, or some other caffeinated beverage. Caffeine gives you an energy boost that lasts for a few hours. However, there are downsides, including increased heart rate and muscle cramps.
  • Eating/chewing. One simple way of keeping focus is chewing gum. When your mouth is occupied, your brain is also kept busy. Just don’t blow bubbles inside your helmet.
  • Shaking your head. Move your head from side to side with enough force to move blood around. This will help you regain focus, but only for a few minutes.
  • Listening to music. This may sound counterintuitive, but don’t listen to music you enjoy. When you are listening to good music, your brain goes to “sleep.” Bad music might grate on your ears, but at least it’ll keep your mind active.
  • Napping. A 10 minute power nap will give you hours of energy. Throw some stretches in there and you’re good to go for a while.
