Head-On Crash Causes Tanker Truck to Explode in DTLA
At about 3:30 a.m. on June 20, a car crashed head-on with a tanker truck carrying carbon dioxide at the intersection of South Central Avenue and East 16th Street in downtown Los Angeles. The impact triggered an explosion that damaged a nearby building.
After the tanker burst into the flames, the 61-year-old driver fortunately was able to escape. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in fair condition. The driver of other vehicle suffered critical injuries.
A nearby building sustained fire damage to its exterior.
Investigators believe the car that slammed into the tanker was going down the wrong way at the time of the incident. The cause of the crash is still being determined.
