On August 13, a 20-year-old Petaluma man was arrested on felony drunk driving and hit-and-run charges after a horrific accident in which the passenger in his vehicle was impaled by a metal fence railing, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Alan Ramirez was apprehended by police along Skillman Lane after a resident reported him for suspicious behavior.
Hours earlier, about 10:30 a.m., he crashed his black Honda Civic in the 3200 block of Skillman Lane. The sole passenger in his car, Miriam Martinez, 20, of Petaluma, sustained critical injuries in the crash after her body was pierced by a long metal fence rail that ran through the front of the car and extended well beyond the other side of the car. She was first taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and then flown to Stanford Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
Ramirez was on felony probation at the time of the incident, and is being held at the Sonoma County Jail without bail on suspicion o felony DUI resulting in bodily injury and felony hit-and-run involving injury or death.
“Our thoughts are with Miriam Martinez and her loved ones,” said a representative of Wilshire Law Firm. “We hope that she makes a full recovery and finds justice against Ramirez, whose reckless actions nearly took a life.”
