Pregnant Woman Seriously Injured in SR-78 Crash with Suspected Drunk Driver

san diego dui crash
On the early morning of June 5, a 27-year-old pregnant woman sustained life-threatening injuries in an Escondido crash with a suspected DUI driver, who attempted to flee the scene.

The accident happened at 2 a.m. at the intersection of SR-78 and Broadway, according to Escondido police Lt. Mike Kearney.

Authorities said the DUI suspect, 33-year-old Jose Uriostegui, crashed his Ford F-150 truck into a Nissan Altima.

A witness stated that Uriostegui attempted to flee the scene:

“The guy from the truck parked here, we couldn’t figure out who was driving the truck, who was in the car. I went over to the car and lifted the air bags, there was a lady, she was pregnant, she’s yelling ‘oh God I’m pregnant, I’m pregnant.’”

Uriostegui attempted to escape after the crash but was subdued by two Good Samaritans.

“So me and James start chasing this guy. I’m trying to dial 911, James catches him, wraps him up, grabs him and we drag him up onto the street where the police see him and apprehend him,” continued the witness.

Lucrecia Vasquez, who is six-months pregnant, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Her 24-year-old female passenger suffered moderate injuries, Kearney said.

Uriostegui was arrested on multiple felony charges, including hit and run and DUI. His injuries were minor.
