San Jose Motorcycle Officer Killed in Crash
San Jose police are in mourning after a veteran San Jose police officer was killed in motorcycle crash on the afternoon of June 14.
Officer Michael Katherman, 34, of San Benito County, was on patrol heading towards North 10th and Horning streets on a department-issued motorcycle when it collided with a southbound left-turning silver minivan. Some bystanders rushed to his side, attempting to help by administering first aid and CPR until emergency crews arrived.
Katherman was rushed to Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
Katherman, who was with SJPD for 11 years, was beloved by his colleagues and by his wife and two school-age sons.
The driver of the minivan cooperated with investigators and was not taken into custody. Drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be factors in crash. The investigation is still ongoing.
