Teen Killed in Crash Involving Distracted CHP Officer

chp crash in orland
On the afternoon of June 7, a distracted California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer caused a rear-end accident that resulted in the death of a Northern California teen, according to investigators.

The fatal victim was identified as Weston Sites, 15, of Willows, a student at Willows High School. He was sitting in the back seat of a vehicle when it was rear-ended at around 3:30 p.m. The deadly crash occurred on northbound Interstate 5, south of Orland. Sites died at the scene.

“(The officer’s) attention was diverted away from the road, looking down at, I believe, his computer,” an official said. “When he looked up, traffic was slowing and coming to a stop. (He) applied his brakes and rear-ended the vehicle that was in front of him, which subsequently got pushed into two other vehicles that were stopped.”

Two female passengers who were also in the car with Sites were taken to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries. They were later released.

More details, including the identity of the distracted officer, are pending at this time.

An investigation is being conducted by an outside team.
