The Most Dangerous Days for Car Accidents

Roads are always dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians. We have to follow traffic rules and exercise reasonable care at all times. Road accidents can happen on any day, and at any time and any place. According to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 40,000 people in the United States die in traffic accidents every year.

When most car accidents happen

We do not know where or when we might get into a car accident. However, there are times when car crashes happen more often than usual.

  • First of all, more accidents naturally happen in the dark due to less visibility. Evenings are the most dangerous due to two main reasons: it is already dark and there are more cars and pedestrians on the streets coming back from work. Moreover, many of them are tired and consequently have worse reflexes. So, be especially careful around sunset.
  • Another period when the number of accidents dramatically increases is during bad weather conditions. Fog or heavy rain causes low visibility. Icy roads force drivers to adjust their regular habits. Many cars skid and pedestrians slip, which results in a lot of accidents. It is particularly hazardous when the ice is covered by a thin layer of snow.
  • Car accident lawyers know that the holidays are the worst when it comes to crashes. Unfortunately, holidays are not only fun and relaxing, but also the worst times to travel. Statistics show that the number of accidents dramatically increases during holidays. There are different reasons why more accidents than usual occur on these days. First of all, holidays are hazardous because there are simply more cars on the roads, which means more cars that can collide. Another reason is that people tend to drink and drive on holidays. Unfortunately, even though everyone knows drunk driving is extremely dangerous, many people are careless enough to think it is okay for them to do it.
  • Top 3 holidays for car accidents

Here are the three most dangerous driving days of the year:

    1. Memorial Day Weekend

While Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer, it is also known as the most dangerous time to drive. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data, about 400 people a year die during the Memorial Day weekend. A usual non-holiday weekend has on average 13 percent less traffic deaths.

The biggest reason for all these accidents is, not surprisingly, alcohol. Around 44 percent of road fatalities over Memorial Day weekend occur because of drunk driving.

Another reason why this weekend is so dangerous is because the traffic is huge. Almost 40 million people each year drive at least 50 miles during Memorial Day weekend. Thus, the combination of that many cars with too many booze at parties and barbecues is what makes Memorial Day weekend so dangerous.

    2. New Year’s Day

Despite what you might think, it is New Year’s Day, not New Year’s Eve, that is one of the deadliest days to drive.

On the other hand, it is not surprising that alcohol is the biggest reason why. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), this day out of all days of the year has the highest occurrence rate of alcohol related deaths.

    3. Fourth of July

According to IIHS statistic data, Independence Day is another deadly day of the year to be out on the road. It is the second worst day when it comes to drunk driving. Approximately 42 percent of all accidents involve driving under the influence.
