Wilshire Law Firm Obtains Trial Verdict of More Than $35 Million in Truck Accident Injury Case
Los Angeles, June 23, 2022 – Senior trial attorney and partner at the Wilshire Law Firm, Jon Teller, is pleased to announce an award of $35,285,942 in a truck accident lawsuit, after a two-week trial in Los Angeles County. Catastrophic injuries existed in this case involving a semi-trailer and passenger vehicle collision.
LA Truck Accident Injury Case Details
Wilshire’s client was an occupant in a vehicle that was rear-ended by a semi-trailer on the 10 Freeway in March 2018. The plaintiff, who was sitting in the rear passenger seat, was among two other people injured in the crash.
The plaintiff suffered multiple injuries, including one in the lower back and a shoulder. He was treated for the back injury with a lumbar spine fusion (1-level). The client also had a spinal cord stimulator implanted in a subsequent procedure along with shoulder arthroscopy.
The defendant argued before and during the court proceedings that both the fusion and stimulator implant were unnecessary. The opposing legal team strongly suggested that the surgeries were not needed and said the costs of medical care both in the past and future were high. The defendant continued to say they were not liable, however, they admitted responsibility for the plaintiffs halfway through the trial.
The trial attorney for the plaintiff presented evidence throughout the court proceedings from witnesses that proved the defendant’s negligence. He also showed that the plaintiff’s life-changing injuries resulted from the trucker’s negligence and that the treatment was appropriate and reasonable.
Jury Breakdown of the Verdict and Award
The jury took roughly two hours to reach a verdict. The final verdict favored the plaintiff with the breakdown listed below:
- $919,942.27 for past medical expenses
- $4 million in future medical expenses
- $9,366,000 in past non-economic damages
- $21 million for non-economic damages in the future
The remaining two plaintiffs were also represented by Wilshire Law throughout; however, another legal advocate stepped in during the trial. An amount of $9,876,948 was awarded.
The insurance company’s legal representative was Jim Gibbons of London Fischer. The defendant’s lawyer was Paul Jacobs of Jacobs and Dobb.
