Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in California

San Jose, CA – Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Vehicle on Morrill Ave near Knights Bridge RdPedestrian accidents take the lives of nearly 1000 people every year in California. So many accidents take place involving pedestrians in our state that California was named the 11th most dangerous state in the country for pedestrians in 2020. Year after year, hundreds of people continue to die as a result of these preventable accidents.

There are several factors that contribute to these accidents frequently in our state. Some of the most common causes of these accidents include:

  • Speeding Drivers: When drivers operate their vehicles at too high of a speed, they have less time to react if pedestrians travel in front of them who are trying to cross the road. As a result, they are likely to strike pedestrians in the area.
  • Distracted Drivers: driving while distracted can include engaging in activities like texting while behind the wheel, talking on the phone, or even talking to a passenger. If a driver isn’t paying attention to the road, they might not see a pedestrian until it’s too late.
  • Drivers Who Fail to Yield: Pedestrians have the right of way in many situations, but all too often, drivers don’t stop or yield as they pass through busy intersections or crosswalks across our state.
