How Best Law Firms ranks law firms

Peer review, client feedback, and tiers

According to its published methodology, Best Law Firms combines evaluations from clients and professional references, peer review from lawyers, interviews with industry leaders, and information that firms submit. A firm can be ranked in a practice area and region only if at least one of its lawyers is recognized in that practice area and region in the current edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

Firms are placed in tiers instead of being ranked one by one, because, the methodology explains, firms are often separated by small differences in overall score. National rankings also take into account regional results, the number of offices a firm has, and the level of legal activity in each jurisdiction. Best Lawyers states that it accepts no fees for consideration or inclusion.

What a Best Lawyers ranking means

What a ranking can and can’t tell you

Best Lawyers is an independent publisher, and its rankings reflect the feedback it collects through its own research process. A Best Lawyers listing is not a certification of specialization, and it does not predict the outcome of any particular case. Each case turns on its own facts and the law that applies to them.

If you are choosing a lawyer, a ranking is one piece of information. It also helps to ask who will handle your case, how they would approach it, and how fees and costs are handled.
