Personal Injury
When a crash on I-5, I-80 or US-50, or a fall on a downtown street, leaves someone with a brain injury, the path back often runs through a trauma center such as UC Davis Medical Center and months of rehabilitation. Wilshire Law Firm, an award-winning, nationally recognized team, represents brain injury survivors across the Sacramento region from our office on L Street downtown. Want a free case review, 24/7? There are no fees unless you get paid.

Explore essential resources on your rights, your options, and what to expect — everything you need to navigate the legal process, all in one place.
Sacramento County's EMS agency routes critical injuries to designated trauma hospitals. UC Davis Medical Center is Level I for adults and is the county's pediatric trauma center, while Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento and Mercy San Juan Medical Center are Level II, and Sutter Roseville Medical Center serves the region from neighboring Placer County. After the acute phase, many patients continue at UC Davis Rehabilitation Hospital, which provides inpatient rehabilitation, and UC Davis rehabilitation medicine treats traumatic brain injury. The records from that care, including imaging, neurology notes and therapy goals, become the evidence of what the injury has taken.
Sacramento is a crossroads: I-5, I-80, US-50, SR-99, the Capital City Freeway and SR-160 all pass through the region, so high-speed crashes and truck collisions are a leading cause of the brain injuries we see. City streets are another. Sacramento set a Vision Zero goal in 2017 of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2027 and adopted an action plan in 2018, a sign of how seriously the city takes the risks to pedestrians and cyclists. Riders hurt on SacRT buses and light rail, and people injured in falls at offices, stores and apartments, also come to us with head injuries.
Civil cases in Sacramento County are filed at the Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse at 500 G St., which handles civil filing, motions and trials. Eligible civil cases are assigned at random to one of the court's Civil Home Court departments, which manage the case through trial. The two-year deadline for most brain injury lawsuits runs from the date of the injury (Code of Civil Procedure §335.1). If medical care caused the injury, the deadline is three years from the injury or one year from discovery, whichever comes first (Code of Civil Procedure §340.5).
Public agencies must receive a written claim within six months of the injury before they can be sued (Gov. Code §911.2), and Sacramento's offices are specific about where claims go. The City of Sacramento accepts claims only through the Office of the City Clerk at 915 I St.; its City Attorney and Risk Management offices do not take them. Sacramento County claims go to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors at 700 H St., by mail or in person, with no electronic filing. Claims involving a SacRT bus or train are presented to SacRT. Our public transportation accident guide explains the transit process.
We meet clients by appointment at 770 L St., Suite 1400, in downtown Sacramento, and a legal professional can begin your free case review by phone at any hour. Strong brain injury cases rest on medical and financial proof of the future, so we work with neurologists, neuropsychologists, life-care planners and economists. A legal professional can review your situation for free, 24/7, and there are no fees unless you get paid. If the City, the County or SacRT was involved, the six-month claim deadline applies.
