The county's EMS Agency designates fifteen trauma centers. Four are adult Level I centers that also treat children at Level II: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Los Angeles General Medical Center and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Children's Hospital Los Angeles is the pediatric Level I center, and ten more hospitals, from Antelope Valley to Long Beach, are Level II. Recovery often continues at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey, whose brain injury program gave medicine the Rancho Levels of Cognitive Function used to track recovery, or at Casa Colina in Pomona, whose brain injury programs are CARF-accredited. Each stage leaves records, from the trauma team's first notes to the cognitive scores in rehab, that prove what the injury has cost.

Los Angeles Superior Court is divided into twelve judicial districts, and since October 2022 a new personal injury case is filed in the district where the injury happened, using the court's filing location tool and the location stated on the civil case cover sheet addendum. Cases from the Central District are heard at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse, 111 N. Hill St., where, since January 2024, each is assigned to one courtroom for all purposes. Other districts file unlimited civil cases at courthouses such as the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse in Long Beach and the Van Nuys Courthouse East. Wherever the case lands, the general deadline is two years from the injury (Code of Civil Procedure §335.1), and an injury caused by medical care runs on a three-year/one-year clock (Code of Civil Procedure §340.5).

Before a public agency can be sued, it must receive a written claim within six months of the injury (Gov. Code §911.2), and Los Angeles is strict about where that claim goes. The City Attorney's office says only the Office of the City Clerk, at 200 N. Spring St., Room 395, can receive a claim against the city; it can be filed online, by mail or in person, but not by email or fax. That includes crashes involving LADOT's DASH buses. Claims against Los Angeles County go to the Executive Officer–Clerk of the Board of Supervisors on West Temple Street, and the original must be delivered in person or by mail. Claims against Metro go to its Legal Services office at One Gateway Plaza, and Metro rejects claims sent by email.
