Understanding Your Riverside Brain Injury Case

Explore essential resources on your rights, your options, and what to expect — everything you need to navigate the legal process, all in one place.

The Riverside County EMS Agency designates the hospitals that receive critical injuries. Riverside Community Hospital on Magnolia Avenue and Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley are Level I trauma centers, as is Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, and Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar is Level II. Survivors of a serious brain injury often continue at an inpatient rehabilitation hospital such as Encompass Health in Murrieta, which treats brain injuries. Every stage of that care produces records we use to prove the injury and its cost, so we start gathering them right away.

SR-91 and SR-60 carry heavy commuter and freight traffic through the city, and I-215 links Riverside to the rest of the Inland Empire before meeting I-15 near Murrieta. High-speed collisions on those routes, including crashes with big rigs that our Riverside truck accident attorneys handle, account for many serious head injuries. Closer to home, the city's Public Works department publishes a Vision Zero Action Plan and a Local Roadway Safety Plan for streets where pedestrians and cyclists are at risk. Falls, defective products and dog attacks also cause brain injuries we see in Riverside County.

Riverside Superior Court changed its civil filing locations on Aug. 1, 2026. Unlimited civil cases are now assigned by ZIP code: the Riverside Historic Courthouse, 4050 Main St., takes the City of Riverside and most of the western county, including Corona, Moreno Valley and Perris; the Palm Springs Courthouse takes the desert cities; and the Menifee Justice Center takes Menifee, Temecula, Anza and Aguanga. Wherever the case is heard, the general deadline to sue is two years from the injury (Code of Civil Procedure §335.1). A brain injury caused by a hospital or doctor follows the medical-negligence deadline of three years from the injury or one year from discovery (Code of Civil Procedure §340.5).

If a city vehicle, a county road or a public bus played a part, a government claim must be presented within six months (Gov. Code §911.2). The City of Riverside accepts claims online, in person or by mail through the City Clerk at 3900 Main St., and its City Attorney's office processes them. Claims against Riverside County go to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors' Claims Division at 4080 Lemon St. A claim involving a Riverside Transit Agency bus is presented to RTA. If the agency rejects the claim in writing, the lawsuit generally must be filed within six months of that notice (Gov. Code §945.6). See our public transportation accident guide for transit claims.

Our team meets clients by appointment at 3880 Lemon St., Suite 410, in downtown Riverside, and you can start a free case review by phone at any hour. Brain injury cases turn on proving what the future holds, so we work with treating physicians, neuropsychologists and life-care planners to document lifelong needs. TopVerdict's 2025 rankings include a $36 million brain injury settlement for our client that placed fourth among California personal injury settlements.
